Hara graduated the Royal Academy of Arts (KABK) and
has been awarded the Jan Roede Prize 2024. The jury: "She combines the precision, patience and attention inherent in craftsmanship with an inquisitive attitude with which she opens up to underlying stories."
Her research into the craft of textile production penetrates the complexity of textile fabrics, but also focuses on the role women have played for centuries in designing and manufacturing these fabrics. Inspired by her grandmothers in Greece, who were the first to teach her the art of needlework, she tries to unravel the complex relationship between textile making and the significance women have had for it throughout history. Just as a fabric is built up layer by layer with angelic patience, so a drawing can be woven together stitch by stitch with great precision with a stunning visual result. With reconstructions of the textile working process, Hara not only exposes the beauty of structures and patterns, but also highlights the resilience, creativity and artistic skill with which women from generation to generation sustained themselves with this.

Threads of Timeless Tales, 2024
Tapestry
Traditional found lace fabrics from Greece (called Semedakia), thread
180cm x 100cm
The tapestry is composed of hundreds of traditional Greek doilies, called semedakia, central to the artist’s heritage. These doilies/lace are folded and compressed, hiding their intricate patterns and the labour behind them. This act reflects the undervaluation of domestic textile work in history.
The hidden patterns symbolize the overlooked artistry of female makers, while the collective result of these fabrics highlights the resilience of their makers.

Tapestry weave
Discarded curtains from Greece, stuffing
160x70 cm
The woven tapestry is made from discarded curtains, materials from the domestic sphere that carry stories of unseen labour. By transforming these forgotten textiles into something new, I aim to highlight the resilience and strength in what is often undervalued. The tapestry reflects how, even in overlooked roles, there is beauty in the collective effort of the warp and weft coming together. These domestic materials, woven as one, tell a powerful story of endurance and unity.

Drawing series of 6 (each one is unique)
Fine liner pen, paper
59x41cm
The drawings are made using a counting method which is used to mark each movement involved in textile work. Every line represents the often overlooked labour performed by women - stitch by stitch, knot by knot, line by line. By tracing each mark, I bring visibility to the time, effort, and care embedded in these processes. Each line tells a maker’s story, and together, they weave a collective narrative of strength and resilience.
