Len Heiner challenges the historically determined conventions of how art should be defined and produced. Instead of working towards a single large work, he opts for an approach that deals with the seed of an idea, where the first glimpse of a subject is materialized quickly and added to his ever-growing repertoire. This way Len is mapping out a sort of subjective encyclopedia of the world, while simultaneously playing with the notion of the artwork as a sacred object.
When installed together, these groups of small works compose juxtapositions and evoke associations the spaces between, without giving comprehensive narrative.
The gentle humor and superficial, childlike visual simplicity of Len’s work invites viewers to let go of their tendencies to intellectualize art and have an experience similar to listening to music.
